– Emotional:
The whole reason why we do music is to stir our affections. We don’t want to be dry or clinical. Singing is there to engage our hearts. There has been a movement in some churches against having emotional feeling in the music or physical expression in the congregation. This comes from a right recognition that we don’t ever want to chase emotional response for the self gratification of the worshipper. We want to use emotions towards a goal… the glory of Jesus. For this reason we do not want to throw away emotions in our singing. There is no point to singing words if we don’t want to evoke response in them. We may as well just speak. We sing because singing brings passion to words. Singing will and should provoke response in people. We want people to feel free to be affected by the truths they sing.
